5. Summary
- Want: verb stem + 고 싶어요, as in 가고 싶어요 and 먹고 싶어요. The past is 싶었어요: 가고 싶었어요.
- 싶어요 is for "I" in statements and for "you" in questions. For he, she or they, use 싶어해요: 친구는 가고 싶어해요.
- Can: a vowel stem takes ㄹ 수 있어요 (갈 수 있어요), and a consonant stem takes 을 수 있어요 (먹을 수 있어요).
- ㄹ-stems add nothing extra: 만들다 becomes 만들 수 있어요, never 만들을 수 있어요.
- Cannot: 수 없어요, as in 갈 수 없어요. Only 있어요 changes to 없어요.
- 수 is a separate word, so leave a space before it: 갈 수 있어요.
