Place and Time Particles · 에, 에서
4. Common mistakes
❌ Mistake 1 — 에 with an action verb
✖ 도서관에 공부해요.
✔ 도서관에서 공부해요.
do-seo-gwa-ne-seo gong-bu-hae-yo.공부하다 is an action done in a place, so the place needs 에서. English speakers often use 에 because "at the library" feels like one idea. Look at the verb, not the English preposition.
❌ Mistake 2 — 에서 with 있다
✖ 방에서 있어요.
✔ 방에 있어요.
bang-e i-sseo-yo.있다 says where something exists, so the place takes 에. The same rule holds for 없다, as in 집에 없어요. Only 살다 allows both: 서울에 살아요 and 서울에서 살아요.
❌ Mistake 3 — 에 after 오늘, 어제, 내일
✖ 내일에 학교에 가요.
✔ 내일 학교에 가요.
nae-il hak-gyo-e ga-yo.The words 오늘, 어제 and 내일 do not take 에. Keep them bare, and use 에 only for the destination 학교. Other time words such as 월요일 and 세 시 still take 에.
❌ Mistake 4 — 에서 for a destination
✖ 학교에서 가요.
✔ 학교에 가요.
hak-gyo-e ga-yo.가요 is a movement verb, and 학교 is where you are heading. A destination always takes 에. Use 에서 only if the school is the starting point, as in 학교에서 가요, which means I go from school.
❌ Mistake 5 — 에 when you mean "from"
✖ 저는 미국에 왔어요.
✔ 저는 미국에서 왔어요.
jeo-neun mi-gu-ge-seo wa-sseo-yo.미국에 왔어요 is a grammatical sentence, but it means I came to America. To say I came from America, you need 에서. This is wrong for the meaning "from", so choose the particle by the meaning you want.
