4. Common mistakes
❌ Mistake 1 — Putting a horizontal vowel on the right
✖ ㄱㅗ → ㅗ written to the right of ㄱ
✔ 고 → ㅗ written below ㄱ (go)Horizontal vowels never go to the right of a consonant. Look at the vowel shape first. If it is a flat line, put it under the consonant.
❌ Mistake 2 — Reading blocks in the wrong order
✖ 가 → "ah-g"
✔ 가 → "ga", consonant first, then vowelInside a block, the consonant is always read before the vowel. The consonant is on the left or on top. Read left to right, then top to bottom.
❌ Mistake 3 — Forgetting the silent ㅇ
✖ ㅏ나 / ㅗ리
✔ 아나 / 오리A vowel cannot stand alone inside a word. Write ㅇ first to make a full block. 오리 means duck.
❌ Mistake 4 — Reading ㅇ as "ng" at the start
✖ 이 → "ng-i"
✔ 이 → "i", the ㅇ is silentAt the start of a block, ㅇ has no sound. It is only a placeholder. The sound "ng" appears only in the next lesson, when ㅇ is a final consonant.
❌ Mistake 5 — Adding or dropping a syllable
✖ 피아노 → "pi-no"
✖ 하마 → "ha-ma-a"
✔ 피아노 → pi-a-no, three blocks
✔ 하마 → ha-ma, two blocksOne block is always one syllable. Count the blocks before you read. The number of blocks equals the number of syllables.
