Sound Changes — 발음 규칙

In Korean, the way a word is spelled is often not the way it sounds. A few clear rules explain almost every case. In this lesson you learn the 6 most useful rules, with spelling, sound and romanization side by side.

1. Why learn this

You can now read every Hangul block. But if you read 한국어 letter by letter, you say "han-guk-eo". Koreans say "han-gu-geo". The spelling stays the same, and the sound moves.

These changes happen in almost every sentence, such as 감사합니다 and 좋아요. They are not random. Six simple rules cover what a beginner needs, and the rest you will pick up by listening.
