5. Summary
- Spelling and sound can differ, but a few rules explain most changes.
- Linking: a final consonant moves to a following ㅇ, as in 한국어 han-gu-geo.
- Nasalization: ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ become ㅇ ㄴ ㅁ before ㄴ or ㅁ, as in 감사합니다 gam-sa-ham-ni-da.
- ㅎ makes ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅊ with ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ ㅈ, and is silent between vowels, as in 좋아요 jo-a-yo.
- Tensing is spoken but not written in romanization, so 학교 is hak-gyo.
- 같이 becomes ga-chi, and ㄴ with ㄹ becomes ㄹㄹ, as in 신라 sil-la.
