5. Summary
- Compound vowels combine two basic vowels. There are 11 of them.
- ㅐ and ㅔ sound almost the same, like "e" in "bed". ㅒ and ㅖ add a y-sound.
- ㅘ ㅙ ㅚ start from ㅗ, and ㅝ ㅞ ㅟ start from ㅜ. Both groups begin with a "w" sound.
- ㅙ ㅚ ㅞ all sound like "we", so read them the same at first.
- ㅢ is "ui" at the start of a word, "i" after a consonant, and often "e" as the particle 의.
- Read each compound vowel in one beat, not as two syllables.
