4. Common mistakes
❌ Mistake 1 — Reading ㅓ like English "o"
✖ 어 → "oh"
✔ 어 → "uh", with an open mouthThe letter ㅓ looks like it could be an "o", and its romanization has an "o" in it. But the sound is closer to "uh". Do not mix it up with ㅗ, which is the real "oh" sound.
❌ Mistake 2 — Confusing ㅗ and ㅜ by position
✖ ㅗ = stroke at the bottom
✔ ㅗ = stroke on the top → o
✔ ㅜ = stroke at the bottom → uBoth vowels are horizontal lines. The only clue is where the short stroke sits. Top is o, and bottom is u.
❌ Mistake 3 — Forgetting the silent ㅇ
✖ ㅏ이 / ㅗㅣ
✔ 아이 / 오이A vowel never stands alone in a normal Korean syllable. Always put ㅇ in the first position. It looks like a zero, but it makes no sound.
❌ Mistake 4 — Mixing up ㅡ and ㅜ
✖ 으 → "oo" with round lips
✔ 으 → "eu", lips flat, a short sound
✔ 우 → "oo", lips roundBoth vowels sound a bit like "oo", so beginners often swap them. The shape helps. ㅡ is a flat line with no stroke, and ㅜ has a stroke hanging down. Flat lips for ㅡ, round lips for ㅜ.
❌ Mistake 5 — Ignoring the second stroke
✖ 여우 → "eo-u"
✔ 여우 → "yeo-u"Two strokes mean a y-sound, so ㅕ is not the same as ㅓ. Count the strokes every time. A missing "y" can change the word completely.
