5. Summary
- Korean has 10 basic vowels, and every syllable needs one.
- Vertical vowels ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅣ go to the right of a consonant. Horizontal vowels ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ go below it.
- The stroke direction sets the sound. Right is a, left is eo, top is o, and bottom is u.
- A second stroke adds a y-sound. So ㅏ becomes ㅑ, and ㅜ becomes ㅠ.
- A bare vowel needs the silent ㅇ in front. For example, 아 야 어 여 오 요 우 유 으 이.
- Your first words are 아이 child, 오이 cucumber, 우유 milk, 여우 fox, 이 tooth and 아야 ouch.
- Next lesson: Basic Consonants (기본 자음).
