Final Consonants · 받침
3. Reading practice
Practice 1 — Finals ㄴ ㄹ ㅁ ㅇ
These four finals are easy to hear. Close your mouth cleanly on the last sound.
산
san
→ mountain
물
mul
→ water
강
gang
→ river
빵
ppang
→ breadIn 강 and 빵, the bottom ㅇ is "ng". Do not drop it, and do not add a vowel after it.
Practice 2 — Stop finals ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ
Now try the stop sounds. End each word with your mouth closed and no puff of air.
밥
bap
→ cooked rice, a meal
집
jip
→ house, home
책
chaek
→ book
옷
ot
→ clothes옷 ends in ㅅ, but the final sound is t. This is the first example of many letters sharing one sound.
Practice 3 — Letters that sound the same
These words look different at the bottom but end with the same sound as a simpler letter. Read the sound, not the letter.
꽃
kkot
→ flower
부엌
bu-eok
→ kitchen
앞
ap
→ front
사랑
sa-rang
→ love꽃 ends in ㅊ, but it sounds like t. 부엌 ends in ㅋ, but it sounds like k. 앞 ends in ㅍ, but it sounds like p.
Practice 4 — Longer words
Read these one syllable at a time. Each syllable gets about the same length.
한국
han-guk
→ Korea
학생
hak-saeng
→ student
선생님
seon-saeng-nim
→ teacher
감사합니다
gam-sa-ham-ni-da
→ thank youIn 학생, the final ㄱ is a quick stop before the next sound. In 감사합니다, the finals ㅁ and ㅂ both appear. The ㅂ before ㄴ sounds like m, so we write ham-ni-da.
