5. Summary
- A batchim is a consonant at the bottom of a block, as in 밥, 물 and 한국.
- Many letters can go there, but there are only 7 final sounds: k, n, t, l, m, p and ng.
- The ㄷ group is the biggest. ㄷ ㅌ ㅅ ㅆ ㅈ ㅊ ㅎ all sound like t, so 꽃 is kkot and 옷 is ot.
- ㅇ is silent at the top of a block, but it is "ng" at the bottom, as in 강 and 빵.
- Stop finals k, t and p are not released. Close your mouth and do not add a vowel after them.
- Double batchim like 닭, 앉다, 읽다, 없다 and 많다 are read with one sound. A final also moves to the next block when that block starts with ㅇ.
- Next lesson: Compound Vowels (이중 모음).
